You may be worried about messing up your shots. The advantages of digital cameras are many. For example, unlike the traditional film cameras, you can take as many photos as as long as your memory card permits. In essence, the digital photography is not only cost effective but also has flexibility to experiment without any hindrance.

Taking many photos will help you to get familiarized with your new digital camera. You should experiment with the digital camera using many features it has, and see the outcome on your photos. Always look for the most appropriate setting suit for the condition, do not blindly follow the default settings, since these may no be the best option. When taking digital photos always try to use natural light which is these the best for photography. Shooting indoors, take special attention to light coming through windows. Some times direct sunlight streaming through a window may not be the best alternative For example, better photos are possible using indirect or softer light coming from a window. Better to experiment using different windows so that you can decide which window provides you the best natural lighting.

3.Get rid of red-eye

The red-eye reduction can be easily got rid of using the facility available on your digital camera. In most digital cameras this feature is provided. When using an external flash, hold it to the left or the right of your camera. And again, try using natural light if possible. If the red eye condition still appears, do not worry, this can be adjusted using the photo edit software.

4.Tripod for taking close-ups.

Sturdy tripods are available at an affordable price, and will be valuable accessory if you are taking close-ups or zooming in. You need to fix tripod on a firm surface when using the tripod. Always invest on a good quality tripods, as cheap ones are unstable. Minimize the risk of managing your valuable digital camera by going for stable and quality tripod. Don’t be afraid to experiment.

With a digital camera, you can do many things without wasting your time and money. Some times you may face with lack of memory space, then just delete what ever you do not retain and get the required space. So if you have not yet into digital photography, start right now, it will certainly stimulate your creativity and for some it may be an income generator.

Tips to Buy Right Digital Camera

Filed under: Photography, Projects, Showings — Admin @ 2:30 am

By Kaushal Sheth

With every new class of digital photography that I start giving courses to, a large proportion of the students bring cameras that are not well suited for them. Most of them simply bought cameras that the salesman suggested they should have. In the end, many of them discover their expensive blunder. Thus it is best to assess the camera in terms of your needs before making a purchase. Some of issues that must be considered before selecting a camera are discussed below:

(I) Picture-taking readiness

The amount of time a camera takes before it is ready to take a picture is a crucial issue. The faster a camera is, the less missed opportunities there will be. The lag times between turning on the camera and taking the picture are as follows:

a. Time to turn on camera: most commercial cameras take between 1 and 5 seconds; the average is 3 seconds.

b. Time-taken to focus the camera: between 1 and 3 seconds

c. Shutter lag time: time between pushing the button and the photo being taken: between 1 and 3 seconds

Thus, cameras can take anything between 3 seconds and 11 seconds to take a picture. Often, this is enough for the moment to pass. Imagine missing the exact moment your child blew his candles at his birthday just because the camera took 3 seconds just to focus. Of course, some may argue that they will always be leaving their camera on, but there is still a lag time between your decision to take a picture and the picture being actually taken. In cheap cameras, this can be up to 9 seconds, sufficient to miss out on important events that would unfortunately not come back.

(II) Manual white balance setting

It is important that the camera enables you to set the white balance manually and not just automatically as this feature may not be as effective as the ad states. Nearly 60% of cameras do not allow manual adjustment.

(III) Different Exposure Modes

Exposure modes refer to the way the camera takes a light reading. Cheap cameras often take an overall reading which does not allow you to take pictures in all light conditions. You should look whether the camera has a spot, center-weighted or matrix light metering system that will enable you to take good pictures whatever the light conditions prevailing.

Finally, many people buy cameras with different features, for example taking videos. Often such cameras can do many things but none of them well, a jack of all trades and master of none! It is better to buy a camera for its primary function: taking still photographs.

So much can be obtained from a digital camera. It only requires some effort to understand how it functions and learning how to take pictures from it appropriately. It must be remembered that nobody looks a second time at a bad picture! Thus, if you want quality pictures that you and your family will cherish all your lives, take some time and effort with your digital camera.

Keep Family Photos Pristine With A Professionally Printed Photo Book

Filed under: Photography, Projects, Showings — Admin @ 6:06 pm

By Dominic Donaldson

Everyone is a photographic expert since the introduction of point and click auto focus cameras, and the digital revolution has improved the chances of taking a professional looking shot even by the most unsure of camera users. Now that the move from film to digital has been fully embraced and the cost of developing pictures have come down there seems to be a million times more photographs in a personal collection. We consider the different ways to archive and display photographs from digital photo frame to printed photo book and wonder if they will ever replace the traditional family photo album.

The traditional photo albums, full of images printed on photographic paper have been the mainstay of photographic collections in homes around the world since the advent of photography. My own personal collection, amounting to an astonishing forty or so albums, houses images of several generations of my family. The earliest ones in my possession are sepia toned and deeply vignetted depicting long gone relatives from the late 1800s. Each of these photographs has a certain smooth quality from a long exposure and the subjects are stiff from bracing themselves whilst the photographic plate was exposed to avoid blurring. The later ones in the collection are super saturated with colour and show every minute detail from blade of grass to pores on the skin.

As a family we often sit around and go through the photos, and the change in aesthetic quality never fails to amaze us; but the presentation has always been the same. Picture either stuck into an album, or in later years, slid into a plastic pocket as part of an album. Some photographs survive the constant flicking through, others have become crumpled or faded and some have reacted with the adhesive causing the picture to deteriorate. Because these images are so precious I’ve always wished there was a way of preserving them better, or at least having a good enough reproduction so that the original photographs can be stored and preserved.

A digital photo frame is a slice of new technology that offers a solution for being able to both store and see photographs without them becoming damaged. By putting images onto a memory card or flash drive you can create albums just as you always would, and depending on the memory available, store multiple albums on one card or drive. Don’t be fooled into thinking that it can only be used for your latest digital photographs either, most photographic developers offer a service where negatives from camera film and even original photos can be digitised and saved to disk. The constant rotation may be a bit much for a whole family back catalogue, but for favourite photographs of families, friends and holiday destinations, it is perfect.

For a comprehensive storage solution and an up to date way to share photographs, the photo book is an ideal medium. Much like the books produced by artists to showcase a collection of images, the photo book houses and displays photographs professionally and the format is intended to be heavily used, so for years to come the family can keep flicking through the pages and the volumes and watch a family tree grow. I believe that this format has greater longevity than the digital photo frame as it is a solid medium, but I don’t think it will replace the actual printing of photographs as individual items. There is something tactile and precious about a printed picture, and at best guess the photo book will act as a way to view pictures without harm, whilst the originals are kept for special occasions.

Taking digital photos in dark conditions

Filed under: Photography, Projects, Showings — Admin @ 8:31 pm

By Deann Keith

Taking photos in dark scenarios are a challenge for any photographer amateur or professionals. Although modern digital cameras can help in that task there is still much that the photographer can do to perfect those dark light photos.

Digital cameras like old film camera work by capturing light on a special device. Old film camera captured light on light sensitive film while digital cameras capture light on light sensitive silicon chip also known as a CCD. Because digital cameras work by capturing light they have one big flaw they can not take pictures in the dark. But the problem is even worse. Digital cameras need plenty of light in order to take good sharp photos. Taking photos during the day when there is plenty of sunshine is easy. But what about taking photos in the evening or at night or indoors when light conditions are not good?

One way for digital cameras or film cameras to take photos in dark conditions is by opening the shutter for a long time. During the time the shutter is open light energy is accumulated on the film or the digital camera CCD. If the shutter is open for the right time enough light energy will be accumulated to capture a high quality photo. The problem with long shutter time is that it can only be used when taking pictures of still objects. If the objects move the result photo would be blurry. The other problem is to keep the camera steady while taking the photo. It is impossible to hold the camera steady in your hands so some kind of a mechanism like a tripod must be used.

If long shutter is not possible the other alternative is to light up the scene. This can be done by using a flash strobe. Most digital cameras include built in flash devices or can be connected to a stronger external flash. There are many problems with using flash light. First it can only be used to take photos of objects that are close to the camera since the light energy emitted is very limited. Even with objects that are close the photo would only include the close objects lit up while a more distant background would be simply black.

Flash light is thus more suitable for taking indoor photos in small close areas for example taking a photo in a room. But even in such a scene there is a problem with flash light. The light emitted by the flash is very bright and white and does not look natural. It is also known as cold light. The flash light can also be to strong making for example people faces look too white or it can be too weak making faces look too dark. Another bad effect of using flash strobe light is red eye phenomenon. When taking photos of people or animals in dark scenes flash light can be reflected from the eyes retina which results in a redness around the eyes as light is reflected from the blood in the eye retina. There is no perfect way to take photos in the dark if possible it is best to take photos in well lit conditions day time or morning time using natural sun light is always the best.
